How to Rotate Screen on Windows 10 or 11?

While most laptop brands are preinstalled with Windows 11 or Windows 10, which support screen orientation natively. If you don’t have a proper graphics driver installed, then you may not see this option enabled.

In order to proceed, install the proper graphics device driver then check the graphics drive before applying rotation.

If you are using a display device that is using Intel chips that supports orientation change or screen rotation, then follow these steps.

  • Under the Display tab options, go to “Display Orientation” and click desired orientation from ‘portrait’ OR ‘landscape’ and other options to rotate the screen.

The above method should work on most laptop brands like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo having Intel based display chips and Windows operating system.

Enable or Disable Screen Rotation Through Windows Registry

If you are fed up with auto screen rotation, need frequent screen rotation, or want to disable screen rotation, here is an easy way.

  • Type in Run box (Windows + R) “regedit” to open Windows registry.

Go to following path

  • “Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation”
  • On the right side double click “Enable” and change value to ‘0’ to disable and ‘1’ to enable.

After this restart your laptop or PC computer.

Rotate Screen Shortcut Keys for Intel Graphics

Intel explains the following easy shortcut keys that will work in Windows 10 and 11 or other operating systems as well to rotate the screen for Intel graphics. These keyboard shortcuts are very useful in different scenarios.

Right click on desktop empty area for the following menu.

You should enable hot keys to make them functional.

Follow these short keys to rotate the display screen with keyboard only or without any other or 3rd party software.

The “CTRL + ALT + Arrow keys” work together to rotate the screen by 90° degrees.

  • CTRL + ALT + Left Arrow key – Rotate Screen to Left
  • CTRL + ALT + Right Arrow key – Rotate Screen to Right
  • CTRL + ALT + Down Arrow key – Rotate Screen by  Upside Down (180°)
  • CTRL + ALT + Top Arrow key – : Rotate Screen to Upside / Normal

Rotate Screen Shortcut Keys aren’t working?

If the above shortcut keys are not working on your device, or the graphics control panel isn’t showing rotate screen option then your laptop/PC doesn’t support rotate screen option.

If you want to confirm whether your device supports rotation or not, open the graphics control panel and explore short keys.

Rotate Screen Using Intel Graphics Control Panel

The above shortcut keys are part of the Intel graphics control panel or command centre. You can change them from there as well.

  • Right click on desktop (empty space) > Click Intel Graphics Settings / Graphics Properties 
  • Go to ‘Display> General Settings’ on the Intel display control panel and change screen rotation.

Note: You may have different Intel graphics names, like Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel, Graphics Media Accelerator Driver, or  Intel Graphics Command Center, choose accordingly. 

Rotate Screen For NVIDIA / AMD Graphics

The AMD graphics control panel is used to rotate the screen apart from the Windows display orientation option. Follow the following steps on AMD graphics to rotate your display screen.

  • Right click on desktop (empty space) > Click NVIDIA Control Panel
  • In the NVIDIA Control Panel go to Display> Rotate Display > Choose desired screen rotation.

Note: You may have different NVIDIA and AMD graphics (AMD Catalyst Control Center and others )control panel names, choose accordingly. If you have multiple display screens attached then choose which display’s orientation you want to change.

How to Rotate Screen on Acer Laptop?

The screen rotation method works the same as mentioned above on most Windows based Acer models like Acer Aspire, Swift, Nitro, Predator, Travelmate, ConceptD, Spin, and Chromebooks.

You just have to identify which graphics card your laptop has, and then follow the instructions above.

How to Rotate Screen on Dell Laptop?

The method to rotate the screen on Dell is the same as mentioned above for Intel, Nvidia, and AMD graphics chips with one exception.

Dell has recently announced that CTRL + ALT + Arrow keys will not work for screen orientation on 6th Generation or newer Dell systems equipped with Intel-integrated graphics. 

The Rotate screen option will be available under the orientation setting of the Operating System Display Settings. Here is the path.

How to Rotate Screen On HP Laptop?

HP laptops which support rotation by default, specifically 2 in 1 laptops, screen rotation is quite easy.

HP has described the method in this post on its official website, as mentioned above. In this section, another method is presented.

This method uses Windows Action Center. Inf order to rotate screen through WAC 

  • Press Windows logo key + A  or Click its icon on right bottom corner near clock
  • Locate Rotation Lock Icon to rotate screen.

Alternatively, you can change screen orientation from settings as mentioned above. These methods should work on all Windows based HP laptops (HP Envy, EliteBook, Pavilion ).

Note: If the Rotation lock is grayed out, your convertible PC is either in laptop mode or has an external device attached, such as a keyboard. If you’d like to change this, remove the keyboard or switch the convertible to tablet mode.

How to Rotate Screen on Lenovo Laptop?

Lenovo has described screen orientation in a post describing the same method mentioned above. This method works for Windows 11,10 and even Windows 7 as well. Interfaces and options may differ slightly but are nearly identical.

When laptop users want to turn on or off auto screen rotation mode due to different reasons, here is the method to do that.

  • Type Settings into the search box on the taskbar, and then click ‘Settings’. Or click settings from the start menu.
  • Click System > Display
  • Locate “Lock rotation of this display” under orientation option. Turn ON or OFF according to your need.

If your Lenovo device’s rotation lock is grayed out, it doesn’t support rotation ON or OFF.

How to Rotate Laptop Screen on ChromeBook?

Android is another operating system, just like Windows, so it supports different methods to rotate the screen. There are 2 simple methods for rotating your Chromebook screen.

  • With the keyboard Shortcuts
  • With the System Settings

With the keyboard Shortcuts

If you are familiar with the Chromebook keyboard, there are just two keys that will rotate your screen. Press Ctrl + Shift + Refresh simultaneously. 

A confirmation popup will appear for permission, confirm to rotate the screen by 90°.

You can rotate according to your desired rotation angle i.e 90°, 180°, 270° or 360° to rotate it back to normal.

With the System Settings

Alternatively, you can follow these steps of Android settings to rotate screen.

  • Open Android Settings
  • Select Device > Displays
  • Select orientation from the dropdown menu
  • Select which orientation suits you.

How to Rotate Back to Normal Laptop Screen

When you have changed screen orientation then keep pressing the same keyboard shortcuts to get back to normal laptop screen orientation. 

Alternatively, you can use the Graphics control panel to get your screen normal. As different graphics chips have different graphics properties, these have been explained above.
